Course Overview
There are two terms of Level 3, in the first term you will be guided by an approachable Core Tutor as well as work with visiting industry professionals to expand your acting techniques. The focus will be on deepening your craft, revisiting and building on established methods, while also developing skills in improvisation, voice, and accent work to prepare for professional work.
You’ll stretch your abilities by playing diverse and challenging characters, exploring different ages, genders, and emotional ranges. Advanced techniques will be introduced in a supportive, high-challenge environment that emphasises relaxation on stage and enjoyment. We always say that the holy grail of acting is relaxation, to be in that “flow state” and the aim of this course is to help you to achieve this.
In the second term, you will delve deeper into techniques designed to enhance your stage presence and charisma—two essential qualities for any actor. Stage presence isn't just about being visible on stage; it's about commanding attention, engaging the audience, and creating a magnetic energy that makes your performance unforgettable. Through a variety of exercises and practical training, you'll explore how to bring a sense of authority and authenticity to your characters, ensuring they resonate with the audience.
Another key focus in this term is empowering you to create your own work as an artist. As an actor, it's vital to understand that the ability to shape and contribute to original material is a significant asset in the industry. You’ll learn the fundamentals of devising and writing your own pieces, whether it’s through improvisation, script development, or collaborative storytelling. This creative process will not only strengthen your acting skills but also expand your understanding of the theatre world, equipping you with the confidence to experiment and take risks with your performances.
Collaboration will be a cornerstone of your training this term. Acting is a communal art, and the group projects will teach you how to communicate and support each other as you develop a collective vision, enhancing your ability to collaborate effectively in future professional environments.
You will also continue to refine your vocal and movement technique. Developing a versatile and controlled voice is crucial for bringing your characters to life with clarity and power, while movement training will help you harness your body to express emotions, intentions, and stories non-verbally. By the end of the term, you’ll be equipped with a fuller range of skills to support your growth as a dynamic, multifaceted performer.
SHOWCASE
The term concludes with a showcase performance, where you'll work in pairs or small groups to present short scenes to an audience of fellow participants, tutors, and family. This final sharing is not a formal performance but part of the learning process, helping you manage stage nerves and celebrate the progress of other groups.
The showcase fosters a strong community spirit, as working together throughout the term helps everyone achieve more than they imagined, with the local TAL community coming together to celebrate the collective journey.
