Screen Acting Course Overview:

This course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of screen acting, focusing on key aspects such as visual storytelling, movement, continuity, and working effectively with the camera to elevate your performance. These are the essential skills that many professional actors wish they had known before stepping onto a set for the first time!

At The Actors Lounge, we are committed to ensuring that our students are fully prepared and equipped with the knowledge they need in advance.

Developed by professional director, actor, and filmmaker Matthew Butler-Hart, the training draws on his years of industry experience. Through this course, we will share invaluable insights—lessons learned on set that can make all the difference for an actor. This term, we’re excited to pass this knowledge on to you, giving you the tools to excel in your screen acting career.

  • Introduction to Screen Acting
You will focus on delving deeper into the key differences between screen and stage acting. The exercises emphasise understanding the technical needs of directors and editors on set, such as maintaining focus and continuity.
  • Visual Storytelling
You will explore how actors use movement, body language and thought to convey the story visually on screen. You will learn how to work with different shot sizes and how each shot tells a story through actor placement and movement.
  • Understanding Editing and Continuity
You will learn how your movements and performance impact editing. You will focus on maintaining consistency in continuity, performing short scenes and ensuring movements and lines match across different takes and shot sizes.
  • On-Camera Technique
You will focus on listening and reacting rather than dialogue. You will also focus on how to use your body and face to tell a story and keep the shot alive. Emphasis is placed on the physical and emotional shifts in character during the scene, with the goal of creating a compelling performance.
  • Duologue Rehearsals
You will rehearse and perform monologues and duologues, working on visual storytelling, shot sizes and precision in movement. Filming starts with an emphasis on understanding how to play a scene using different shots.
  • Final Duologue Filming
The course culminates in filming duologues with a focus on both wide shots and close-ups, refining skills in movement, emotional depth, and precision. You will apply all of the skills and technique learned throughout the course to create cohesive, captivating performances on camera.
